Best Tips for Lawn Care

Updated: Mar 23, 2021

Maintaining a perfectly groomed, thick, and green lawn might appear easy, but it is actually much more difficult than it looks. That’s why sometimes it’s a good idea to get some tips from a lawn care specialist. Most lawn care is best done during the autumn or spring, as it gives your lawn time to repair and grow before or after the summer.

Tip #1: Remove weeds and thatch

These items will prevent growth as they block air and nutrients from getting to the roots:

  • Weeds: These can be easily brought into your garden by birds, pets, animals, or even the wind! Many lawn weeds grow as flowers and there is a huge variety that grows within lawns. The easiest way to get rid of weeds is to pull the entire weed out, including the root!

  • Thatch: This is a layer of organic matter usually consisting of dead leaves, root stems, and old grass. Often it can build up between the fresh grass and soil. This thatch creates a blockage, which once again, prevents nutrients, moisture and air from getting to the roots.

Tip #2: Focus on drainage

If you have ever seen a lawn with poor drainage, you will have seen a law with a pool of water in the center. This means you have water sitting on top of your lawn for hours or days, and it can lead to bad health complications for your lawn. Typically the reason for poor drainage is the fact that your soil is not absorbing water, or you need to change how your garden is landscaped.

Tip #3: Aerate your lawn

Aeration is the process of allowing air and water to penetrate the roots of your lawn. This is, once again, vital for your lawn to receive proper nutrients. This is also a good way to combat the negative effects of drought or poor drainage. Aeration is usually performed simply by creating small holes in different areas of your lawn. This can be done with specialty aeration shoes or even a garden fork. Most gardens will only need to be aerated once every 2-3 years.

Tip #4: Don’t be afraid to over-seed

Although over-seeding might sound intense, scary, odd, or even expensive, it is actually the act of bringing your lawn back to life. By covering the whole space with a large quantity of seed, followed by fertilization, you can fill in damaged areas of your lawn. This will make your lawn brighter, and reduce your chances of lawn disease or weeds.

Tip #5: Mow your lawn the right way

When mowing your lawn you need to do so the proper way. This means you cannot remove too much, and you should really only mow up to one-third of your grass’ length. There is also not a specific amount of frequency that you should mow. This will hugely depend on the weather where you live as well as the season. Lawn care is not difficult, but it does need to be done the right way. Find Lawn Care Near Me.
